10. Where does digital media fit in?

  • The simple answer is that it is just a part of the repertoire of the technology that supports assessment. It should enhance and extend possibilities, but it doesn’t transform the nature of assessment itself..

  • The more complex answer is that we need to ensure that on-line assessment or that which involves electronic means reflects developments in assessment thinking discussed here and not older ideas from instructional design which may represent a completely different conception of assessment (which have mostly influenced on-line assessment so far).

  • There are many examples of electronic portfolios, uses of blogs and on-line presentations which extend the range of assessment products.

  • Simply moving a poor design on-line doesn’t make it better, even if follow-up links to resources can be easily added.
