12. What do assessment designers need to know?

  • Assessment is about students representing the outcomes of their learning to themselves and others.

  • There needs to be continuity with the good learning environments which precede assessment.

  • Assessment which exhibits good technical features but which does not promote effective learning processes is not good assessment.

  • Finally, I would ask myself: if I was undertaking this course, would this act of assessment be a worthwhile culmination of what I have achieved as a learner? If not, we have work to do.
