This is a broader curricular issue than assessment, but it is arguably particularly pertinent to first year. It was prompted by a finding somewhat buried in a report by Geoff Mason et al (2003) on employability which was published on the HEFCE website in 2003. Some students reported being required to give prersentations in a number of their modules - the implication being of a lack of connectedness in their overall programme.

How, then, do we encourage - in modular schemes - innovation in teaching, learning & assessment without (excessive) duplication of methods?
