Marking is based on the use of special wiki features such as: user contributions, page history, user statistics - available on most wikis in more or less sophisticated form.
However, even then - difficult task, and especially difficult for the second marker!
Additional wiki features could ease the problem and make the task more manageable for the marker: e.g. highlight in different colours the contributions of different authors on the same page, word counter, text matching etc. MediaWiki, as an open platform, can provide some of the listed features if there is enough interest in the community.

Use of weekly "work records" (as described in the study) can also help in assessment, and in addition it gives students chance to track their work and compare it to the work of other students

I can see how the ability to make the interaction more public is a major benefit of online technologies. It provides the means of monitoring students progress and make appropriate interventions to steer students in more fruitful directions. However, as Dave Boud says, we need to make sure that assessment doesn't undermine the formative process. From my experience quantifying participation tends to encourage students to meet the minimum requirements rather than focus on the qualities of the final outcome. Given that we don't really have good evidence for the best way to use these technologies, does it really matter how the students arrive at the final result?

We need some balance her - between quantifying and non-quantifying participation. I don't think that non-quantifying it will be helpful for majority (and there are only few Enstaines anyway to justify changing the entire process because of them :)
Quanitfying participation is also for encouraging regularity, time-management and organizational skills... Not only for "ticking boxes "

Regular contributions enable tutor to give meaningful feedback to the entier class (as opposed to one contributor)...
