This is Q.2 from Steve's initial facilitator questions.

What other techniques do the same job (or a better job) as EVS in generating out of class discussion? Does anyone have experience of alternative techniques that delivers the same results?

Our students are set a collaborative task to do and must submit a synthesis response using an e-portfolio system. They collaborate and 'discuss' the task by sharing thought assets in the e-portfolio system. End of year written exams indicate that this has been successful in stimulating useful in and out of class discussion - the arithmetic mean score of students has risen by 11% It should be said of course that in class dicussion often arises from thoughts posted also.
