In yesterday's chat, people shared some tips for doing this and Andy Sharp posted a crib sheet to help students design questions on to the message board forum. I've started this topic to see what things delegates think are key to creating good questions, in order that we can share some best practice.

Just as a starter

what I have found that works is that when questions explore personal opinions

questions which are related to students life experience

questions which relate to the working environment or career path that students have experienced.

Questions which relate to commonly held beliefs which may have very little substantiation or generate controversy. e.g Great leaders are born and not made, men are better leaders than women.

I believe that tapping into emotional type content can be rewarding as students have to evaluate their own beliefs and opinions and compare these to the rest of the group

Hi Andy,

That's interesting as what you're doing with these questions is opening up debate by exploring experience and belief rather than knowledge. So, in fact, the answer to the question is not really the most important thing, it's the way the answer is used to promote collaboration and idea sharing.

Debra

the other great option is when students are involved in this type of question design as a collaborative element. The degree of self analysis and group discussion around why this would or would not be good to ask as well as the students pre-empting or spotting expected answers and how they would respond to the results of the vote is pretty exciting
