Welcome to the discussion session about 'In-class vs out-of-class work by students'. Please use this board to discuss the central topic. There are also discussion boards assigned to the associated case studies. Please post direct queries to the authors regarding the case studies to those boards.

Hi all - 'in class versus out of class' - don't forget the many distance learning students who may never get near a classroom! So it may be all/mostly outside work by students - in the office, at home, over the internet, using coursebooks, e-mail, telephone etc.....

Well, the obvious answer is that both in-class and out-of-class engagement are important. Depending on the type of course and which stage the students are at, this can be done using various activities. I think the use of EVS/ARS/PRS/clickers has mostly been done in-class is because of the difficulty of engaging a full class of students all at once (especially large lecture halls), and also (not sure which is the cause and which the effect) that a lot of the software/hardware available for this requires students to be in proximity to each other.

The way Mazur uses "concept tests" can be done in-class without technology, but the technology allows him and his students to see the distribution of answers, thus alerting him and them to whether there are misconceptions about a topic, justifying further discussion.

For out-of-class work, a much deeper level of engagement can be achieved - as James says, you have all these different technologies that allow for different kinds of activities, not just MCQs (available through EVS)
