Thanks for your comments and questions Nigel.

With respect to the issue of consistency of experience, in the 1st y students all participate in the same activities related to working through all the aspects of completing an examination on a patient - so while they work on each other and so have different presenting situations, the exercise is basically the same. This also applies to 2/3 of 2nd y clinic sessions. The students enjoy this early clinical experience and is one of the changes being called for in dental education. To assess their performance, we use exhibits (Dimi has looked after this for many years) based on applying their learning on say interpreting a radiograph, evaluating dental models, impressions, etc. Other approaches that are used in dentistry (and other health professions) include OSCE examination allowing students to complete short activities with say standardised patients or simulators, eg taking a history, giving advice, completing an examination, taking impressions etc.

The issue comes when students work on patients as obviously the patients do not have the same needs. So we do not have criteria/standards for each patient situation, but have generic ones that link to dental disciplines as the students progress through the programme. The key here is trying to ensure both tutors and students have common understandings - I think that was a point in David's presentation re working with both students and staff. We have not moved on to addressing the issue in later years, but will be interested to see if we need to work on developing understandings of good performance in the later years. We have really only targeted staff at this stage with Dimi running many sessions over the past few years.

I hope this somewhat addresses your comments.
