If you need a little time out from assessment chat, here is the place to chill out, post off-topic messages and find out more about your fellow delegates. I'm Catherine Owen, project manager for REAP, and I'm looking forward to learning more about you and your home institutions and countries.

well hello Catherine and everyone else!

I'm really excited to be participating in this conference - I've participated in webinars before, but never in an entirely online conference that also includes asynchronous discussions!!! The format of the conference makes so much sense that I can't believe I've never participated in a similar one before!

Anyway :o) I've co-authored a case study that is scheduled for May 29 at 1400 BST; looking forward to that, although I am not sure if I will be using audio or just text chat... can someone clarify that?

My case study is based on an innovation at the American University in Cairo, in Egypt, where I am a Senior Instructional Technologist at the Center for Learning and Teaching.

I'm currently on a leave of absence from work and based in Houston, Texas, so unfortunately most of the live sessions will be out of my time zone!! But I will try to participate in the asynchronous discussions (and again, what a great idea!)

Take care everyone and looking forward to a great conference

Hi Maha!

Glad to see that you've found the cafe already!

For your chat session on the 29th it is text chat that will be used, and there will be a test day for you to try it out before hand (hopefully within your waking day!).

It is really exciting to see so many people registering for the conference. And there are participants from so many different contries and time zones that there should always be people around no matter what time of day (or night)!

I look forward to 'seeing' you at the conference!

Alison.

Hi Maha

We were really happy to have a case study from Cairo, especially one about the use of electronic voting systems because this technology has been a big part of our project too. I'm glad that you are excited about the format of the conference... we think it's a great way of meeting international colleagues and finding out more about good assessment practice. Our only regret is that we won't be welcoming you to Glasgow in person.

Look forward to chatting (in text!) about your case study next week.

Hi Catherine, good to see you again (even if it's just your photo). We met at the QE conference in Edinburgh, if you remember. Glad to be getting involved in this conference which looks very exciting. Just off to scope what else is going on but I'll check back here later.

Well let's see if I've managed to upload a picture of me and not some random other thing.

Well hello everyone! It looks like I'm the first male to take a plunge into the Cafe! I must say I'm already very impressed with the way the website works and all the tools available, plus it looks really good!

Looking forward to participating in the seminars and discussions.

Best wishes, Dave.

It certainly helps to put a face to a name. Do you know what platform or software is being used to run the conference website?

The conference environment has been built specially for us by the rather wonderful Learning Services department here at the University of Strathclyde. I'm sure they could talk you through the set-up, although this might be best after the conference as they are very busy just now.

The best thing is that all of these discussions can be archived for future researchers. It's a great way of creating a snapshot of current thinking on assessment.

Hi everyone,

Following Dave's lead and in an attempt to readdress the balance. Hello I'm Martin Hawksey. No doubt most of you will recognise my name (as most of the emails from the conference site go out in it - ain't I a busy boy)

Dave, the platform we are using is DotNetNuke. The platform is open source with a couple of bought add-ons. Most of it is out of the box but we've done some customisation along the way. If any of you are having any problems with the conference site let us know, we're here to help.

Hello Everyone

I am about half a world away in Australia, yet it seems like I'm just down the corridor from you all.
I am used to forum discussions with my students, and as a student, but this is my first online conference so it will be an interesting experience.

Here in Oz I teach Computer Engineering - hardware and software design.
I am interested in improving assessment generally, but particularly for the cohort of students who perpetually seem to think surface learning is going to get them by in a 'design' course!

I look forward to the conference 'presentations' / case studies, but also to interact with many other like minded academics.

Regards Mark

Hi All,

I've even further round the world in Wellington, New Zealand.

As well as seeing other people's thoughts on assessment I'm also interested to see if an online conference can engage me as much and be as social as a one in some exotic farway hotel. I'm hoping someone has organised a virtual cocktail party and dinner ;-)

Cheers!

Hello Everyone

It's nice to log in and find the conference cafe buzzing with people! The environment looks great and I look forward to all the conference discussions. I will now go away and try to make at least a small dent in the pre-conference reading... When I'm done I might need that virtual caipirinha :-)

Hi everybody

I'm looking forward to getting new ideas and maybe suggesting some myself. It's a nice mix of people from different disciplines. Looking forward to the sessions, especially those on teaching large groups.
