Hi Saretha

Sorry I have no experience of using concept mapping for assessment. Can you tell me anything more about it?

My recent experience and challenge has been to ensure good assessment feedback to a module taken simultaneously by over 700 students. We did this last year using an electronic feedback based on a menu of standardised comments. Let me know if you are interested in any aspect of this.

The process of thinking about increasing the quality of feedback and our analysis of student evaluation of the feedback process used has contributed to our thinking in the redesign of next year's assessment and feedback strategy based on a portfolio approach which contains evidence of reflection on summative work undertaken regularly during the semester.

If anyone has experience of assessment by portfolio, any tips in assessment of portfolios would be most welcome. Thanks.

Hi Susan...I have been using portfolio assessment for several years as a form of both formative and summative assessment...the approach I use is one that integrates the portfolio entries with weekly readings and tutorial activities, and is designed to equip students with skills in critically analysing journal articles and other scholarly publications...this assessment strategy has been used successfully with both large undergraduate subjects as well as online undergraduate and postgraduate subjects, and is readily modified to accommodate the needs and skill levels of different cohorts...I'd be happy to discuss this approach with you in greater detail if you like...cheers, Sue

Re: Concept Mapping
I've recently become a convert to electronic concept mapping using CMAP (which is both free and well-supported). We have put it on our institutional desktop and it seems to work fine.
There is a useful chapter by Jane Fox and Dot Morrison on using concept maps to support learning and assessment with pre-reg nursing students in Hartley et al (2005) Enhancing Teaching in Higher Education, Routledge.
