Thanks for your very interesting presentation.

What was not clear to me was how you use (or plan to use) the artefacts and data that you collect. Do you make some form of independent assessment of the portfolio for internal use? How do you see the portfolio fitting in to the federal requirements currently under discussion?

Does the whole process involve teachers in any work addiitonal to their normal assessment load?

I found your presentation thought provoking.
Will students take their portfolios with them as they move into work/further study?
They could be used as part of their personal lifelong learning alongside any other learning- in or out of the workplace.

Hi, Ted:
We have treid to organize the portfolio to have as minimum extra work for faculty and for students as possible. We have tried to accomplish that by integrating the portfolio meaningfully into our assignments and course curriculum, so that the work for the portfolio is not additional, but rather becomes part of the course curriculum.

To answer the first part of your question, we think that electronic portfolios can respond to the accountability for learning focus of the federal government more effectively than the CLA that the Spellings Commission is proposing. In terms of internal uses, we use the electronic portfolio to measure understanding of our Principles of Undergraduate Learning.

Dear prof Banta
The electronic portfolio is a valuable tool to serve as evidence of learning, the student in addition can reflect on his own progress which cultuvates a metacognition, an awareness that is specifically meaningful in dealing with students underprepared for higher education. the electronic environment also provide opportunity for various skills to be developed

Thanks for an informative set of background notes and a presentation that started to explore the potential beyond the current application. Institutional outcomes assessment; regional accreditation evidence; student-led integrated programs of study; credit transfer; and accreditation of prior experience are just a few of the options. All need time and energy to implement within existing frameworks but keep up the good work.
