End of the aside

  • What can we take from this?

  • For students to learn they must be engaged in a task and be challenged by it. Being engaged means they must find it worth doing, and being challenged means not be overwhelmed by the magnitude of the task or frightened by it, but being stretched by it.

  • Acknowledging context means recognising that there is always a context for any task in the real world and that being aware of the context of knowledge and how it will be used is engaging and helps meaning making. Artificial activities that only occur in the world of assessment are likely to be less meaningful than activities, the value of which can be seen.

  • Involving practice in the context of assessment means the completion of a task that requires a variety of knowledge and skills to be put together for iits completion, rather than one in which all the elements are clearly signaled.
