9. What are clearly not great designs?

  • Activity is for assessment purposes alone

  • Measurement rather than development of learning is emphasised

  • Encourages short-term performance at expense of long term learning

  • Low student involvement in processes

  • Reliability is emphasised over validity

  • Promotes learning that is not conducive to building learning skills or encourages inappropriate learning (ie. negative backwash effect)

  • Encourages over-dependence on the judgments of assessors/teachers

  • Outcomes are not transparent (eg. results are coded in percentages or marks not grounded in criteria)
