10. Where does digital media fit in?
The simple answer is that it is just a part of the repertoire of the technology that supports assessment. It should enhance and extend possibilities, but it doesn’t transform the nature of assessment itself..
The more complex answer is that we need to ensure that on-line assessment or that which involves electronic means reflects developments in assessment thinking discussed here and not older ideas from instructional design which may represent a completely different conception of assessment (which have mostly influenced on-line assessment so far).
There are many examples of electronic portfolios, uses of blogs and on-line presentations which extend the range of assessment products.
Simply moving a poor design on-line doesn’t make it better, even if follow-up links to resources can be easily added.
