4. Therefore a new emphasis on assessment designs that promote learning is needed

  • My starting point is that consideration of assessment design must start with how students are likely to be impacted.

  • The impact of assessment occurs:

    • prior to assessment points in anticipation of what is to take place
    • during assessment events allowing students to reveal or disguise their learning
    • following assessment in terms of what students choose to engage in or avoid
  • In short, assessment is the most influential lever to effect types and approaches to study, the extent of engagement and what students take from their courses.
