5. What are great assessment designs and what gets in the way of implementing them?

  • Great assessment designs have a significant feed-forward influence on study

  • It is necessary to be able to anticipate the influence of assessment on students (and this will vary between students and on different occasions) and ensure that this is overwhelmingly positive in great designs

  • Not only do they contribute to learning, but they are acts of learning in their own right

  • They contribute to creating the environment in which learning occurs and is sustained

  • While they must provide whatever useful important is required by others about student performance, if this is all they do, then they cannot be great designs.

  • [My assumption is that there is no shortage of knowledge about how to measure student performance, but that we do need to consider carefully how we do this without negative consequences.]
